Cover letters are employers first impression of you as a person. Although resumes are very important for demonstrating your skills and experience, they don't provide the full picture of your personality and ability to apply your talents. Cover letters allow you to explain why you think you would be a good fit for the position and what you have learned from your previous employment.
Approaching the application
When you first look at a job application, what do you notice? The ethics of the company and who they are is a good start, but the true importance of a description is the responsibilities. They don't write out these long lists for the fun of it, they are doing this so you know what to expect to do when you start! Showing in your cover letters that you have some experience, or if not at least some interest, in this field will definitely show the company that you, not only took the time to read the description, but feel you could be a fit for their company!
taking it step by step
First off: don't just jump to the responsibilities!! I know I said it's important, but what's more important is making sure that you know what the company is telling you about themselves. They aren't trying to waste your time with useless words, so more likely than not if they are unpaid they are telling you what you will get out of the internship.
Now it's time to get to the meat of the description! Here we have in this example two different outlines of categories of work that the intern could become involved in. This doesn't mean that the single intern will be taking on all this work, but that they simply may be mentored or asked to perform tasks like the examples listed.
Okay, now look I get it. This seems like something you can handle, you need an internship for school credit- you're ready to hit apply! BUT you need to look at these instructions my friend!! Even if you think you got it all figured out, the application process with one internship may not be the same as others. So if there is a section explaining how to apply you should check it out because there might be information they want to see in your cover letter that you can miss- which could just cost you the position!
Now here we are, the last part of the job description. It wraps up with some skills that could be useful, but don't fret if you can't do everything- that's what an internship is for!! It's a learning process so as long as you have the willingness to learn and can handle some stuff, you can figure it out along the way!
Okay so you may be sitting here thinking why did I read through this I know how to apply I wanted a template or something for my cover letter I will explain!! You sat through this because now you REALLY KNOW the job description well. That's your template right there! There isn't some universal way to organize what you want to say, you do it based off of what the job description says because it will give you insight on what they are looking for and what they need. That way you can format your paragraphs to answer these questions explaining that
you are..... The best person for the position!
and your skills........ Are what they need!!
It's not too long or complicated, sometimes they will say they want a minimum of this many or that many words, but if they don't say anything a good guideline is no more than 500 words so it's easy to get through!
I hope this was helpful, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions !!
