summer thingsThis summer I am trying to go into doing things for myself. I want to make living my life as special as possible because, as cheesy as it is, you only get one. I think that when I am in school I can get caught up in the madness of papers, projects, exams, and work but when I take a moment to step back, there are so many personal passions that I table to pursue during the summer. Of course the summer comes around and I get distracted from doing anything... but that is why I am writing this series!
I journal every single day personally but it's a place for me to sort out my emotions and thoughts about my life. (plus it helps me remember what happened a year ago today since my memory sucks) I decided that I needed something more to hold me accountable for my professional goals in life. Personally I think journaling is a great tool towards tracking and managing your mental health as setting aside some time each day to think about your emotions and sort out how you feel allows for a reflective life. I believe the difference with this blog is that I can track my progress with what I do and learn for my future. And hopefully it can be useful for you guys too!! I want to make something impactful, something that lasts and helps others but that is a long project and takes some time to complete. Hopefully with this blog I can guide others during their processes of achieving their goals as well. Plus these projects may be interesting and helpful for you so, without further ado, welcome! This blog shall be transformed into a hub of sorts. A place where you can find my daily goal achieving process, little things that I create, maybe some reflective thoughts, and much much more. Thank you for baring with me through this long introduction and I hope you have a wonderful day! :)

i've always wanted to watch a gangster movieWow. Just wow.
This film was amazing! I watched the episode 'Contemporary American Poultry' in 'Community' and always thought it was based off of mob movies in general, however I didn't realize until the very first scene that it was an homage to this film particularly! The chills I got when I realized Abed's line "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a mafia movie" which is a direct reference to the line that starts off 'GoodFellas' entirely: "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster" I was giggling and getting chills as I now picked up on all the references to the episode and I knew and loved from 'Community' but eventually I started to forget I was watching this film to get the reference, but truly enjoyed the film for what it is. The characters all fleshed out and developed and the constant schemes and plot points engrossed me in this world that I could never see co-existing with mine. It's crazy to realize that this is based on a true story of "a real gangster, his associates, and one of the most daring heists in American history." (ATI) I truly recommend this movie to everyone, it's a smart film. You don't have to be smart to watch and enjoy it, but you can tell that the people that created this knew what they were doing. It has wit, action, and natural dips. But these are never lulls in the story, only intentional waves in an emotional journey of the story of these characters lives. batman or joker movie? This was an amazing film and Heath Ledger definitely stole the show! You can see how much effort and dedication he poured into this role, truly knowing and understanding the character inside and out. The poster tells it all because, without a Joker, is there a need for Batman?
I have watched some Batman movies, but not this one particularly. I am really glad I watched it because the storyline of 'two face' and how the Joker ultimately uses the mayor to corrupt the city and have people lose faith in the good of people is brilliant! I especially love this movie since I have seen 'Joker' (2019) which shows the evolution of this character. I feel that Joaquin Phoenix in 'Joker' (2019) did an amazing portrayal of the characters descent into madness, and Heath Ledger in this movie really paved the way for this character to develop. His chaotic spontaneous energy keeps the audience on its toes the entire time and is enjoying, just as much as the viewer if not more, the cat and mouse game he has with Batman. Batman is also amazing portrayed by Christian Bale, I loved the way he stayed true the vigilante crime fighter that we know, and remained an anti-hero in his decisions. We truly see a man that lives outside of the system of the cops, and does what he sees fit whether or not people support that decision. With the missing juxtaposition between Batman and Joker you typically are exposed to in a superhero movie, we are able to realize that this isn't a movie about heroes and villains. It's about the gruesome reality of crime and justice. nostalgic goldThis is an all time classic! I have watched this movie many times before but this particular rewatch was the first time I have seen it since graduating high school. I feel that this added an extra layer of nostalgia to it since I am no longer in that phase of my life. This movie is such a great experience and it just has great energy the entire time through.
The film is very successful in breaking down these tropes and stereotypes of each kid you'll see walking down the hallway. We can see ourselves identifying with each of the characters as they also realize they connect with each other more than they previously thought. We all have within ourselves a brain, a jock, a diva, a criminal, and a basket case. And we love each of these sides of ourselves for their own reasons. Not only is it chock full of iconic lines and scenes that have been referenced and had homages made in honor of them, but they genuinely feel like real conversations between kids. The movie doesn't try too hard to break down categories, it just does. Because this movie is what it is and doesn't try to be anything more or less than that. That's the beauty of it. The beauty and the criminal, the athlete and the weirdo, and the nerd and his wonderful paper. I think I identify with Brian and Allison the most... not sure what that says about me. Anywho, I recommend this film to ANYONE who is simply looking for a good movie and a good time. comedic chaosThis movie was completely different than the last film I watched 'Alien.' With very ridiculous comedy about the life of fraternities and the rivalries between different ones of the same campus, this movie gives viewers a chance to take a break from what they're doing and just laugh.
Since it was made in 1978 you can definitely tell that it is dated from the characterization of women, racist jokes and slurs, as well as homophobic slurs thrown around. Apart from the negatives, you can also just see a difference in the language of the characters, the clothing, and the incorporation of a military in the college which isn't as common today. This is a part of the film and it's important to recognize that just because it was a piece of its time doesn't mean it isn't wrong, however it is possible to enjoy the movie after recognizing its flaws. 'Animal House' isn't something particularly revolutionary, it's a college party movie that has some pretty funny jokes and plot lines. I definitely think it is not necessary to watch as there are better, more recent, films from this genre such as 'Superbad' or 'American Pie' that have some more relevance to today, but this doesn't mean it isn't a fun film to watch if you're interested in it! I did like watching this movie, but I found that I was more interested in the beginning than later on when I was waiting for it to come to an end. It was by no means slow in events occurring, but for some reason my engagement was lost through the details of the end scene. One thing I will finally note, was that this film does have 'where did they end up' captions on freeze frames from the last scene which is always a favorite trope of mine. These were very comedic in their juxtaposition with the characters personalities during the film that leaves it off on a fun upbeat note. I would recommend this to someone who wants to see a more dated college party movie. horror classicI am a huge fan of the horror, suspense, and thriller genre so I was excited for this movie knowing it's an important one from the genre. This movie specifically has a lot of scenes shot without actually showing the 'alien' and showing a dark, mysterious lighting that sets the tone. I really liked this film! I am currently watching all the movies referenced in the show 'Community' and this was the first in my list. This is my first time logging a film in letterbox and I am happy to say that this was an enjoyable film, still pretty much holding up to todays standards. Of course the effects and general cinematography is a little dated, however I feel that the plot points and aura of suspense created the desired effect of an engaging film!
I do think there were certain dull moments in the film because of the general lighting and lack of a bit of setup, however this may be simply due to the technology accessible at the time of production. I will say though that an element I found myself liking was the way in which the film didn't show much of the 'alien' itself besides glimpses and quick flashes until the end. I believe that with any horror/suspense film this is key because our brains always seem to come up with scarier images than the screen. Seeing the aftermath of these monsters makes us get the chills as we put together the pieces of what happened compared to seeing everything play out in front of us. To sum up, I enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good way to spend almost 2 hours. It's not too long where there are repeats in the plot, but it is by no means short. I think if you're looking for an older horror movie this would be a great one to check out! |
